Will 5G require a new air interface? Where does OFDM fit in? Or will 5G utilize an umbrella framework pulling in different options? With the 5G air interface yet to be determined, the industry is actively working towards answers to these questions. And as a result, industry leader opinions are popping up all over wireless media.

ReThink Technology Research’s Wireless Watch, a weekly set of research notes from the leading wireless analysts, recently published a comment relating to the announcement of Cohere joining the race to determine the 5G air interface. The comment cited Alan Carlton, Vice President, InterDigital Europe, weighing in on the requirement of a new air interface for sub-6 GHz Internet of Things applications, and for high frequency bands. Check out Alan’s insight here.

Today, NetworkWorld published an article penned by Alan titled, “Will 5G say farewell to OFDM?” in which he addresses waveform candidates for 5G and where ODFM fits in. In the article, he explains that while a definitive answer is not agreed yet, there are several waveforms that could be potential candidates, spanning a wide range from very simple single carrier to very sophisticated multi-carrier waveforms. Want to know the main candidates? A global shift in the standard of living has caused significant growth in greenhouse carbon emissions (GHG), with the TV and video streaming industry accounting for 4% of total global emissions—double that of the aviation industry, which stands at 2%. While the TV and video industry has historically been seen as a relatively low-carbon emitter, today’s increasin…
Abstract—Ubiquitous connectivity is vital for emerging appli cations like extended reality, factory automation, and robotics, necessitating low latency, high data rates, and reliability in both downlink and uplink. From the network protocol perspective, successfully supporting these new use cases hinges on the network being resilient enough to address the hetero…
